Overview

B.Sc Psychology / Bachelor of Science in psychology is a three-year-long undergraduate degree that aims at studying the science of mind, the behavior of mind and mental functions of animals. In this process of studying psychology students will learn about states of mind, consciousness, emotions, motivations, attention and perceptions, learning, memory, cognition, nervous system, endocrine system, hypothesis, qualitative analysis, interview methods, life cycle, problems of the mind, conflicts, etc.

They also get to learn through theory and practical education so that they can get an overall development and knowledge of the subject. Students who wish to study Bachelor of Science in psychology should have good communication skills, ability to work in groups or alone with different kind of people, an open mind, patience, etc. They must have a genuine interest in the subject and ability to understand people from different backgrounds and mindsets. They must be empathetic, sensitive and caring as well.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The basic eligibility for joining this course is that students must be over the age of 17
  2. Candidates must have completed their PUC or 12th standard with a minimum of 40 percent marks in their respective HSC examination.
  3. They must apply for the colleges separately and admissions are done based on the merit of marks and the interview ( it is held only in some colleges).
  4. The admission process for a Bachelor of Science in psychology is direct so, students have to submit applications directly.

They can take up jobs like social workers, school psychologist, research psychologist, rehab specialist, recreation worker, psychiatric assistant, caregiver, career counsellor, counsellor, career employment counsellor, childcare worker, childcare specialist, counsellor, education counsellor, neuropsychologist, industrial psychologist, forensic psychologist, community relation officer, daycare supervisor, development psychologist etc. The starting salaries in this field for fresh graduates can be anywhere between rupees 3 lakh to 10 lakh rupees per year. Whereas the salaries can hike as the students earn experience and expertise of the students increase with time and knowledge.

Students who wish to become teachers after this degree will also need to do a bachelor of education or B.Ed to qualify. Alternatively, the students who have graduated can also choose to take up higher education in India or higher education abroad by joining the Master of Science in psychology, master of science in child development, master of science in military psychology, master of science in counselling psychology, master of science in clinical psychology, master of science in applied psychology etc or even a PhD.
