JEE Advanced Exam

Overview

Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) is the second level of the JEE exam conducted after JEE Mains. This exam is usually for the engineering aspirants who are on the run to join the most sumptuous and leading engineering institutes such as the IIT`s. The exam is organized by one of the 7 old IIT`s namely IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati. Apart from these JEE Advanced scores are also used for admissions in non-Indian universities such as University of Cambridge and National University of Singapore. Besides this JEE Advanced scores are also used by other universities such as IIPE Indian Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Indian Institute of Space Technology and IISC Indian Institute of Science.

The exam was initially known as IIT-JEE was later renamed as JEE Advanced and the AIEEE as JEE Mains. The exam is conducted under the guidance of JAB Joint Association Board.

JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria

  1. Candidates must be able to fulfill the basic eligibility in order to qualify the JEE Advanced examination. Here are a few prerequisites that a candidate should fulfill to attempt the exam.
  2. Candidates must have cleared their JEE Mains and have secured a rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates.
  3. For those applying for the exam they should have been born on or after October 1, 1996. For the reserved categories such as SC/ST, PWD, OBC, a five-year relaxation will be given.
  4. Students can appear twice for the exam in two consecutive years.
  5. Students should have cleared their 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.
  6. Those candidates who were unable to appear for the JEE Advanced in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic but have qualified JEE Mains are directly eligible to appear for the exam.
  7. Post-Covid and the on-going pandemic there were certain relaxations which have been very helpful to students. This relaxation in JEE Advanced 2022 eligibility criteria is like a golden opportunity for students.
  8. Candidates need to register on the required portal and pay the exam fee as well.

JEE Advanced Application Form

As soon as JEE Mains results are out, the conducting authority for JEE Advanced will release the application form and other credentials for the following exam. IIT Kharagpur is in charge of releasing the application forms. Students need to follow a procedure of registering themselves on the official website and then fill in the application form. The top 2.50 lakh students who have qualified with best ranks will be eligible to write the IIT based JEE Advanced exam. While filling the application form students have to choose any 5 exam centers from an IIT zone. JEE Advanced exam centers are in almost 161 cities and once the centers are fixed, they can’t be changed.

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

  1. The mode of examination is computer based.
  2. There will be 3 sections in the question paper namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics.
  3. Students will be given an option of choosing the medium of instruction in Hindi or English.
  4. There are 2 shifts for papers: 9am – 12pm and 2.30pm- 5.30pm
  5. Candidates have to mandatorily be present for both the papers.
  6. There will be multiple choice questions, numerical based questions and matching list questions.

JEE Advanced Marking Scheme

The JEE Advanced marking scheme is somehow not fixed. Given below is the outline of the marking scheme based on previous year question papers.

Marking scheme for numerical types:

  • 3+ for correct answer.
  • There is no negative marking for questions left unattended and incorrect answers.

Marking scheme for one or more correct answers:

  • +4 if all the responses are correct.
  • -2 for incorrect answer.
  • +3, +2, +1 for partially correct answers.
  • No negative marking for attempted questions.

  • +3 for correct answers
  • -1 for incorrect answers
  • No negative marking for unattempt questions.

JEE Advanced Counseling

The JOSAA Joint Seat Allocation Authority is in charge of conducting the counseling for the JEE Advanced exam. Candidates need to first register with JOSAA who qualify the JEE Advanced exam and only then will they be able to participate in the counseling process where the candidates can choose their preferred IIT courses. The seat allotment for the qualified students will be done considering the ranks that students secure and their preferability of courses along with the availability of seats.

On clearing the exam students can take admissions for various courses and programs such as Bachelors, Masters, and Integrated Bachelors etc. They can opt a degree in engineering, science, architecture, design, pharmaceuticals which are offered in almost 16 IIT`s and ISMS.

JEE Advanced Documents Required

Candidates are required to submit a few documents for JEE Advanced registration.

  1. Birth certificate or class 10th certificate
  2. Class 12th certificate
  3. Caste certificate
  4. Disability certificate (if any)
  5. If any name change then should be submitted with a gazette notification.

JEE Advanced Dates- 2022

  1. Registration for the JEE advanced 2022 starts in May last week.
  2. Application link is jeeadv.ac.in with the same login id used for JEE Mains registration/login.
  3. Last date to register is June 1st week.
  4. Admit card availability is June 2nd week.
  5. Exam date is June 3rd week.
  6. Results are July first week.

The most important topics which have weightage for scores are listed below as per the subjects:

  1. Physics: Electricity & Magnetism, Optics, Modern Physics, Units and Dimensions, Mechanics, Thermal Physics, etc.
  2. Chemistry: Atomic structure & Chemical bonding, Chemical Kinetics, chemical equilibrium, Gaseous & liquid states, Solid-states etc.
  3. Mathematics: Matrices, probability, Trigonometry, Differential Calculus, Analytical Geometry, Integral Calculus, Units & Dimensions, Vectors etc.
Tips for Preparation

JEE Advanced is a competitive exam attended by lakhs of students all around India in which only 2,50,000 merit holders from the JEE Mains will appear for the exam. JEE Advanced is a gateway for engineering students to get a seat in the most sough-after IIT`s. The exam can depend on moderate and difficult. All students and IIT aspirants need to do is prepare a smart strategy and effective plan to clear the exam with flying colors. Many students start their preparation for this combative exam right from their 11th standard and leave no stone unturned in their preparation.
